I need a little experienced wisdom:I am about to purchase a 4000 series tractor. I have read all the raves about HST and have driven one briefly at the dealer today (nice!). They have two tractors in stock that interest me: 4200/4WD/HST or 4300/4WD/SyncReverser. Both have mid PTO. I could buy either for about the same money (less than $100 difference, a little less than $14,000 - we haven't gotten to the final bottom line). My intended uses is strictly as a utility tractor for mowing a 3+ acre pasture, moving dirt, plowing snow, digging post holes, light discing, etc. I like the 4200/HST but I also like the idea of having more power and capacity on the 4300.I am looking at getting the loader, 6' rotary mower, rear blade and then pick up other implements as I need them.Does anyone have direct experience with both transmissions? Shoot - many years ago I used to do everything on an old Farmall H with gravity return hydraulics and seemed to get along. Is the HST that much better than the SyncReverser?Given the above - do I go for the HST or the bigger tractor?Thanks to all,Charlie

I would go with the Hydrostatic 4200, still.. yes, I believe the Hydro is that much better.. It is so easy to use. I wouldn't trade my 4200 for any amount of money. I had an 855 before.. and that was Hydro.. I had to get another Hydro after that machine.. That was the best machine I have ever owned.. and I had that for twelve years.. got excelent trade in for it towards my 4200.. the loader is great on the JD 4200, nothing compares.. I can pop it on / off in a matter of 1 minute.. all that time is just plugging in the color coded plugs... There is one thing I wish they left the same on the 4200, that I miss on my 855.. and that is .. I can't use my Mid Pto.. seperatly from Rear Pto.. on the 855 you can.. I miss that terribly.. because if I have a Rototiller hooked up on rear of machine.. and my mid mounted mower hooked up.. I can't mow, without the Roto Tines turning.. so I have to take the rear implements off the back to do Mid mount mowing.. 855 I could leave whatever I wanted on the back.. It is still a powerful machine... excelent for Loader work.. It is a very heavy machine.. so you must use the lowest range for dragging a Rotary Bush Hog.. Gears are clunky compared to the smoothness of Hydro.. trust me.. much easier on fatigue..Jason.. ....

I faced exactly the same decision and settled on the 4300 synch-reverser. Besides having more PTO and pulling power, it can use the larger, more powerful 430 loader. While a hydrostatic transmission is convenient, the synch-reverser is hardly complicated. Neither I nor my wife has the slightest difficulty using it. If money were no object I probably would have gotten a 4600 HST. Since it is, and the choice came down to the one you face, I went with the larger SRT. It is important to drive both. If your dealer doesn't have both, go wherever you need to in order to try them. Either choice should get you a very usable tractor. ....

Made the same choice a couple months ago and got 4300 w syncrev. Unless doing lots of back and forth you may be satisfied w syncrev. I came from old non-sync tractor also, and this is a nice tranny for any but the most clutch-phobic. Power is better than expected, running flail mower rated for 4500 no prob. Good luck! ....

Well - I've gone full circle. The dealer thought he could trade his 4300/SyncRev with another dealer for a 4300/HST but it fell through. I have an option of waiting for a Hydro and the dealer will work with me by loaning me a tractor in the meantime but, based on discussions here and with others, I have decided to go with the SyncRev. Previous experience with a standard tranny in the past makes me believe I can get along just fine with the Synchro + reverser and I can use the extra $1,200 or so towards another implement instead. Price for tractor (4300/SyncRev/4wd/mid-PTO/Turf tires/DSCV) is $14,894. 430 loader is $3,025. I believe this is a fair price based on what I have seen posted here and elsewhere and based on the current demand for these tractors.I was told that the 420 loaders are in such high demand that if you ordered one today you wouldn't get it until after the first part of August.What a market opportunity for Deere with these compacts. Too bad they weren't able to ramp up faster to meet the demand.A couple dealers I spoke to were pretty frustrated to have paying customers at their doors an not be able to take their money! They can move a few to larger or smaller platforms but it looks like Deere has a winner in this series. I don't know how strong the demand is with Kubota, New Holland and others. I can only guess that they are doing well.Thanks for all the feedback on all the questions I asked on this board. It sure helps!Charlie ....
